Bans Are Not Empowering! Community Event

After staying silent on SB1 – a near total abortion ban that puts Hoosier lives at risk – the Greater Bloomington Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch at a private luncheon at the Graduate Hotel on Tuesday, August 9 at 11:30am. Lt. Gov. Crouch will be giving a talk on “Empowering Women Leaders IN Indiana.” This talk is a slap in the face of all Hoosier women after the Indiana State House voted on Saturday to take away access to safe, compassionate, and evidence-based reproductive healthcare. We call on the Chamber to rescind this invitation, sponsors to pull out of the event, invitees to decline to show up, and we ask Bloomington business owners to stand up in support of women and girls’ basic rights.

Concerned Hoosiers will assemble outside the Graduate Hotel on Tuesday, August 9, at 11am to discuss what it means to empower women leaders and to make our voices heard.

Speakers include City Councilwoman Isabel Piedmont-Smith, Erin Tobey from Hopscotch Coffee, and Mary Catherine Carmichael. Stay tuned to our social media for any updates!

Voters Decide Celebration - Monroe County

The results of the election are now conclusive - Joe Biden is the legitimate president-elect of the United States. Yet, as feared and expected, President Trump is working to undermine the legitimacy of this election, using legal and extra-legal methods to overturn the will of American voters.

We invite all members of our community to gather peacefully on the courthouse square to provide strength and solidarity for the work ahead, to demonstrate our confidence in and respect for the election results, and to celebrate the many grassroots organizations and individuals who tirelessly served the community during the election cycle. This rally will include speakers, student activists, and organizers who were instrumental in ensuring voters were informed and well-fed at the polls during election day, and who fought voter suppression and registered voters from underrepresented communities.

-Jennifer Crossley, Chairwoman of the Monroe County Democratic Party
-Allyson McBride, IU Dems
-Shruti Rana, Monroe County National Organization for Women
-Lindsey Batteast, Rising Rainbow Coalition

Please read the following information carefully to keep you and our entire community safe:

1. The non-violent, peaceful rally will take place on Sunday, November 8 from 12-12:30 on the square.
2. The rally will be kept short to ensure the safety of all participants. Please be on time and disband at the end of the rally.
3. Be COVID safe: wear a mask, maintain distance as feasible, and stay home if you are experiencing symptoms.
4. Wear bright clothing.
5. Feel free to bring signs.
6 We expect counter protestors. Do not engage them. In all interactions, work to de-escalate tensions and prevent violence.

We encourage participants to sign up at the following link because it allows us to communicate quickly if necessary: https://www.mobilize.us/ptr/event/362239/

#StopTheBans Bloomington Rally and Repro Justice Fair

Join Monroe County NOW and Indivisible Bloomington & 9th District Tuesday, May 21, 12 - 2pm for the #StopTheBans Rally and Reproductive Justice Fair! This event will take place on the Monroe County Courthouse lawn.

At noon local time at statehouses, town squares, and courthouses across the nation, we will show up to speak out and fight back against this unconstitutional attempt to gut Roe v. Wade and punish people with uteruses.

We are pleased to team up with Indivisible to host this event. Come to hear how you can fight for reproductive justice rights here in Indiana, and join with other organizations in saying no to these bans.

These bans hit low-income folks, LGBTQ+ folks, and people of color especially hard. Not everyone who has a uterus and who needs access to reproductive justice is a woman.

We will also have a table for you to contact your representatives, with postcards, scripts, and stamps. The Monroe County Courthouse is located at 100 W. Kirkwood Ave. in Bloomington.

Event hashtag: #StopTheBans
